What Is a Pump Laser Marking Machine?

A pump laser marking machine is a solid-state laser system that uses an optical pump source (flash lamp or diode) to excite a YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) crystal doped with neodymium (Nd) or ytterbium (Yb). The laser emits at 1064 nm in the near-infrared, which is absorbed by most metals, plastics, and coated surfaces. The beam is steered by a galvanometer scanner to write text, graphics, and machine-readable codes on the workpiece without inks, solvents, or consumables.

There are two main pump configurations: end-pump (lamp or diode injected along the optical axis, lower power 20–30W, smaller spot ~0.05 mm, ideal for fine detail and small characters) and side-pump (pump sources injected radially through the barrel, higher power 50–100W, larger spot ~0.15 mm, ideal for deep engraving and high-speed marking). For most PCB marking applications (serial numbers, barcodes, logos on FR4 substrates or aluminum nameplates), the end-pump configuration is preferred for its finer detail. Marking Process & Materials

The pump laser marking process has four stages: design file import, galvanometer scan, material ablation, and (optional) post-clean. The laser pulses at 20–200 kHz with 4–200 ns pulse width to vaporize a controlled depth of material without thermal damage to the substrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between pump laser and fiber laser marking?
Pump laser (Nd:YAG) uses a solid-state YAG crystal pumped by flash lamp or diode, emits at 1064 nm. Fiber laser uses a doped optical fiber pumped by diode, also emits at 1064 nm but with much better beam quality (M² < 1.5) and electrical efficiency (30% vs 5%). For most PCB and metal marking applications, fiber laser is now the preferred choice because it is smaller, cooler, and more reliable. Pump laser is still preferred for some deep-engraving applications on aluminum and brass where the wider spot size and longer pulse width give a better visual contrast. We ship both technologies; consult us for the right one for your application.
What materials can be marked with the pump laser?
The 1064 nm wavelength works on virtually all metals (stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, titanium, anodized aluminum) and most plastics (ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate, PEEK, FR4 with epoxy coating). It does not work on transparent materials (glass, clear acrylic) and PVC (which releases chlorine when marked). How small a character can the pump laser mark?
On the end-pump GE-LM30 with 0.05 mm spot size, the minimum vector character is 0.05 mm (50 µm) and the minimum dot-matrix character is 0.15 mm. In practice, 0.3–0.5 mm characters are the most common size for PCB serial numbers and barcodes, and they remain readable to the naked eye and to most barcode scanners. For 2D data matrix codes (ECC200) we recommend a minimum module size of 0.20 mm.
What file formats are supported for the marking design?
EZCAD2 (included) imports DXF, PLT, AI, BMP, JPG, PNG, GIF, and SVG. Vector files (DXF, PLT, AI, SVG) are preferred for sharp edges on text and graphics. Bitmap files (BMP, JPG, PNG) are converted to dot-matrix mode. The software also supports barcode fonts (Code 39, Code 128, EAN-13, QR, Data Matrix) and serial-number generation with auto-increment, date code, and shift code.
Can the pump laser mark on a curved or 3D surface?
Standard 2-axis galvanometer scanners (X–Y) can mark only on flat surfaces or simple cylinders (with rotary attachment). For complex 3D surfaces (sculpted metal, molded plastic) we offer a 3-axis dynamic focus scanner that adjusts the Z position of the focal plane in real time, with 50 mm working range in Z. The 3D scanner option is available on the GE-LM100 side-pump model and adds approximately 20% to the price.
